Flower Nursery
Jose Campos came to the Pájaro Valley from Guadalajara, Mexico in 1980. When he first arrived his brother and Uncle found him a job working in a local Nursery, transplanting, irrigating, and cutting flowers. After working for 4 years for the Nursery Mr. Campos saw an opportunity to expand his horizons. He had a lot of free time after work and asked if he could lease some of the Nursery’s land to start his own flower supply during his free time. “It started out small,” Mr. Campos said, “they gave me 3 acres to plant flowers and we formed a partnership. After working during the day for that Nursery I worked on my own land, planting the flowers for them to sell.”
Finally, in 1986, Mr. Campos left the Nursery he had worked with and started his own flower supply business. Mr. Campos’ brothers, their wives, and his cousins helped to get the business going when it first started and they are still involved. “Sometimes we bring flowers up from Mexico when they are in season.” His small idea turned into a large family-run Nursery business that now employs up to 80 people. “We sell wholesale: we sell cut flowers, field flowers, and some green-house flowers,” Mr. Campos said.
Mr. Campos received help from the El Pájaro CDC when he needed a loan in 2006. “El Pájaro CDC helped me to connect with the bank and get a loan. They also continue to help by giving me information about important business news, or about ways that I can expand my business and make it better.” Mr. Campos has put a lot of effort into building his Nursery business and he wants to make sure it continues to thrive. “I dream to do better all around, get a better facility to have better customer service, and keep getting new techniques that improve service,” Mr. Campos said.
