Interview with Jaime Ortiz; February 11, 2002

We are three brothers working together with this business. We had the idea to start this in order to create a future, and so when we heard about the opportunity with El Pájaro CDC, the three of us started to get together to plan our business. Each of us also works in the field when it is the high season for field work.

We’ve been selling cowboy-style clothes, work clothes, and cowboy boots plus other items made of exotic skins for two years here at Plaza Vigil. We decided on this type of merchandise because we all like to wear this style of clothing. For the most part our merchandise comes from León in Guanajuato, but also other places like the Yucatan where we get the “Guayaberas.”

Things are a little hard right now, since it is a low time of the year. From April through November when it’s the high season in agriculture, business is better. Because of this region, the seasons affect all of the businesses in the area.

Most of our clients are Hispanic, but we also have some North American clients too. We see them all as friends. We want them to feel comfortable in our store. Even if they don’t want to buy anything, we feel that we gain a lot with creating friendships.

We started this all with a little bit of illusion, but because it is a family-based business, we are driven by this to continue forward. We’ve also had the help of the CDC. Truly, the CDC has helped us very much.

We’ve had to sacrifice with this business, but we always continue ahead. It’s an effort on behalf of the whole family, but we are here to serve our clients.
